WINGED DISK is a tiny independent label from Long Island, New York, which was breach-birthed by UNDER THE VOLCANO a music fanzine that existed for about sixteen years.

Starting with the Vicious Beatniks EP in 1991, we've since sporadically helped our favorite local bands get records out. Generally, we only work with people we've already been friends with for a very, very long time. Although some of the bands will still press CDs on occasion, these days WINGED DISK is a digital label.

Although "punk" in spirit and philosophy, WINGED DISK, as a label, has no one specific "sound." And yes, we realize this makes it tough to "categorize" what we do for "marketing" purposes, but hey, life's a bitch. The reason WINGED DISK exists is to give some tough-to-pigeonhole bands we really dig a means of expression and some type of support.

To further illustrate how diverse WINGED DISK releases can be, we released ASS FOR IT BY NAME by ENDANGERED FECES, which is a seventeen-minute scatological punk rock blast by an act whose guitarist, Jay Levitz, once claimed the band was merely the soundtrack to a toilet paper fight -- the band still hurls 200 rolls at every show.

The SOMETHING IN THE WATER: THE SECRET HISTORY OF LONG ISLAND PUNK compilation included rare and out-of-print tracks by bands like DEAD VIRGINS, HORROR PLANET, ISM, JIMI LALUMIA AND THE PSYCHOTIC FROGS, NIHILISTICS and SEA MONSTER.

Speaking of SEA MONSTER, a garagy punk n' roll band of mythic proportions, over the years we've helped release six records by the group, including their latest, HERE COME THE MOON.

People on Long Island still remember the misanthropic metallic hardcore of SPLINTERFACE and the SEVERED FROM THE WORLD EP, which was produced by Chris Moriarty of CONTROLLED BLEEDING.

THE SKELS took the best parts out of The Replacements' playbook, but were a lot funnier and had tons more soul. WINGED DISK helped them with the Mystery Fez 7" "Then We'll See" b/w "Soon I'm Gonna Fall," and hope to be releasing their back catalog digitally (and possibly some new stuff!) in the near future. Yep, SKELS frontman MICHAEL "SPORT" MURPHY is the same guy who released three solo albums on Kill Rock Stars, and no, this is NOT the Irish punk band from Jersey -- these SKELS are from Long Island, and have been around since 1988.

Other WINGED DISK bands include MICHAEL KORB, a brilliant singer/guitarist whose release SLEEPWALKER lands somewhere between Radiohead and Elliot Smith... NECROPARTHENOPHAGY, a black metal band with lyrics in the magickal Enochian language, and CONTROLLED BLEEDING, an experimental band that careens from ear-shattering noise to more ambient material.
